'A Child's War'

Our topic for this half term is 'A Child's War' - a Humanities topic learning about World War 2. We will be learning about how WW2 began, rationing, evacuation, key events from the war, whilst also focusing on what it was like to be a child during this time period. We will also be comparing what life was like then and now.

There will be regular updates of the children's work on our twitter page.

Planning

Please see attached the medium term plan for Autumn 1. Pupil voice is very important to us at St David's. We look forward to generating ideas together as a class for our new topic.

All of our planning will be based around the six areas of learning and experience and the four core purposes.

Homework will be placed on Google Classroom every Friday. Please submit all homework by the following Wednesday so we are able to look at your wonderful work and send this back to you.

Each week, children will be asked to complete either a piece of numeracy or literacy based homework which will alternate from week to week. There will also be a termly homework grid sent out based on our topic. Children may do as many homework tasks as they like over the course of the term. Please see below for this terms homework grid. Children are allowed to complete their homework in whichever format they wish to choose. E.g hwb, PowerPoint, homework book, posters, etc.

Weekly spellings will also be taught in class and given to the children to practise at home.

The children will be rewarded for completing their homework by receiving dojos!

Weekly Routines

Snack

Please bring a bottle of water to school daily, clearly labelled with your name. Healthy snacks can be purchased from the snack trolly or brought in from home. Children will be offered toast and milk in the morning.

PE

Please wear your PE kit to school on Friday's. Children should wear black shorts, house colour or white t-shirt and trainers, labelled clearly with their name. They may also wear black jogging bottoms when completing activities outdoors.

Uniform

Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child's name.

 Christian Values

Our school Christian Value this term is Generosity

This term in school we will be focussing on the value Generosity. We will be hearing stories about peace from the Bible and examples from our daily lives. We hope that you will explore this value together at home too.

G iving something we value to someone else

E  ncouraging the best in each other

N ever selfish

E  njoying helping others

R  aising support for a good cause

O ffering what we can

S  haring our time and talents

I   nviting someone to join in

T  aking care of God’s creation for future generations

Y  ou first, me last.

Four Core Purposes

The four purposes are that all children and young people will be:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
  • Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.
  • Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.
  • Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

In Dosbarth Ogmore, we will start to look at each aspect of teaching and learning and how it will support us in becoming Ambitious, Capable Learners; Enterprising, Creative Contributors; Ethical, informed citizens and Healthy, Confident Individuals.

 Modern Foreign Languages

This year we are going to be learning Spanish. We will be learning key Spanish phrases through fun games and activities.

Activities and Games to learn languages

https://www.languagenut.com/en-gb/

Languagenut is a wonderful online tool where children can access resources to support the development of their new language (Spanish). Each child will have their own log in details where they can gain points for activities completed. Languagenut will also give you the correct pronunciation of words and phrases.

All children should have brought home their login details, however if you need a reminder please contact year6@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk.
