'Revolting Recipes'

Our topic for this half term is 'Revolting Recipes' by Roald Dahl with a Health and Well-being focus.

We will look at different recipes from Roald Dahl’s different texts and manipulate them to create our own Marvellous concoctions! We will be applying our accurate measuring skills, scaling up recipes and converting between metric and imperial units in Maths and Numeracy.

In Science and Technology, we will be looking at reversible and irreversible changes when making revolting recipes as well as looking at how we can sieve and filter solids and liquids. We will be presenting our findings using a Slideshow. Children will also be exploring bottle/wrapper designs, make their own for their revolting recipes and evaluate their designs.

In Languages, we will be writing a biography about Roald Dahl’s life and will be writing instructions to make a revolting recipe. We will be working on improving our sentence level work (complex sentences, fronted adverbials and imaginative vocabulary).

In RE, we will be exploring 'What would Jesus do?'. In Expressive Arts, we will be exploring the style of the illustrator Quentin Blake and will be designing out own characters in his style. In Humanities, we will be looking at maps to source where all of our ingredients have come from and calculating the distances.

There will be regular updates of the children's work on our twitter page.

Planning

Please see attached the medium term plan for Spring term. Pupil voice is very important to us at St David's. We look forward to generating ideas together as a class for our new topic.

All of our planning will be based around the six areas of learning and experience and the four core purposes.

Homework will be placed on Google Classroom every Friday. Please submit all homework by the following Wednesday so we are able to look at your wonderful work and send this back to you.

Each week, children will be asked to complete either a piece of numeracy or literacy based homework which will alternate from week to week. There will also be a termly homework grid sent out based on our topic. Children may do as many homework tasks as they like over the course of the term. Please see below for this terms homework grid. Children are allowed to complete their homework in whichever format they wish to choose. E.g hwb, PowerPoint, homework book, posters, etc.

Weekly spellings will also be taught in class and given to the children to practise at home.

The children will be rewarded for completing their homework by receiving dojos!

This week's VIP is... Ramani! A huge congratulations! You have shown beautiful manners all week and demonstrated a positive attitude to learning. Gwaith da! smiley

Weekly Routines

Snack

Please bring a bottle of water to school daily, clearly labelled with your name. Healthy snacks can be purchased from the snack trolly or brought in from home. Children will be offered toast and milk in the morning.

PE

Please wear your PE kit to school on Friday's. Children should wear black shorts, house colour or white t-shirt and trainers, labelled clearly with their name. They may also wear black jogging bottoms when completing activities outdoors.

Uniform

Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child's name.

 Christian Values

Our school Christian Value this term is Trust.

This term in school we will be focussing on the value Trust. We will be hearing stories about trust from the Bible and examples from our daily lives. We hope that you will explore this value together at home too.

Trust is a really important value. It must be earned. If we do not trust someone it is very hard to build a good friendship with them.

Talk together about:

• people who you know that are trustworthy

• practical ways that we can show others that we are trustworthy

• why it is important to be able to trust others when working together as a team

Four Core Purposes

The four purposes are that all children and young people will be:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
  • Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.
  • Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.
  • Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

In Dosbarth Ogmore, we will start to look at each aspect of teaching and learning and how it will support us in becoming Ambitious, Capable Learners; Enterprising, Creative Contributors; Ethical, informed citizens and Healthy, Confident Individuals.

Welsh

The Welsh language is very important to us at St David's. We encourage both staff and children to use incidental Welsh both inside and outside of the classroom. We enjoy our daily Helpwr Heddiw sessions to support children in learning new phrases by playing fun Welsh games.

 Modern Foreign Languages

This year we are going to be learning Spanish. We will be learning key Spanish phrases through fun games and activities.

Activities and Games to learn languages

https://www.languagenut.com/en-gb/

Languagenut is a wonderful online tool where children can access resources to support the development of their new language (Spanish). Each child will have their own log in details where they can gain points for activities completed. Languagenut will also give you the correct pronunciation of words and phrases.

All children should have brought home their login details, however if you need a reminder please contact year6@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk.

Healthy Schools

We are very proud that St David's is a healthy school. We encourage all children to eat healthy during snack and lunch times.

We are able to provide snack for your children in school at a daily cost of £2 per week / £14 per term. Please pay via Parent Pay.

Please ensure that your child has a labelled bottle in school daily, containing water only. We have fresh drinking water fountains, where the children can refill their bottles.

At St David's, we are extremely fortunate to have access to a range of different ICT devices. We promote the use of 'SMART' rules daily, as we know how important it is to stay safe online.
