Autumn Term 2020 - Welcome Back

Here's a reminder of what our school will be like when we return from September 2nd

Weekly Routines

PE - Our P.E. slot will be on Fridays. Your child will need black shorts/jogging bottoms, a white T-shirt or house coloured T-shirt and trainers. All PE will be outdoors so please also wear a jacket. Please wear your PE kit to school on Fridays. I will inform children of any one-off changes to PE days and will send a Schoop message to you as far in advance as possible.

Lunches - Our school canteen will remain closed until September 21st. Please make sure you bring a healthy packed lunch with you every day until further notice. You will also need a  bottle of water, labelled clearly with your name. When school dinners resume,  as we are a cashless school, dinner money is to be paid in advance via ParentPay.

Snack -  Usually, a healthy fruit snack is available for each child for £1.50 per week or £10.50 per term (to be paid via ParentPay before 8am on Monday mornings).

However, we are currently unable to offer this as an option due to our Covid19 regulations.

Therefore, we are asking that children bring their own healthy snack (fresh fruit or

vegetables) until further notice.

Parents Guide for Hwb Classes

Year 5 Hwb

Please stay connected to the Hwb class that you joined in Year 4 as this will become renamed as the Year 5 Hwb class.

If you are not already joined, please visit this link and join our class:

https://hwb.gov.wales/classes/93553a4b-60e2-4393-a59a-22d069685654

All children will need their Hwb log in to access our Home Learning Portals.

Please email year5@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk if you cannot remember the password so I can send a reminder, or if the log in details are compromised so that I can reset the password.

This Hwb class will be used for a mixture of home and school based activities, and will be used again if another unplanned school closure is required.

Weekly homework will be sent out each Friday in your child's Homework Book and will be due in the following Wednesday.

Each week, they will be asked to complete either a piece of numeracy or literacy based homework which will alternate from week to week.

There will also be a termly homework grid sent out based on our topic. Children may do as many homework tasks as they like over the course of the term. Please see below for this terms homework grid.

Children are allowed to complete their homework in whichever format they wish to choose. E.g hwb, PowerPoint, homework book, posters, etc.

Reading - Reading is an extremely important part of your child's learning. We will take every opportunity to try and listen to your child read throughout the week, therefore, we would kindly ask that you ensure your child's reading book and diary are returned to school and are available on a daily basis. Pupils will also take part in group guided reading sessions everyday, where we will look at specific reading skills. Please try and support your child in reading every evening, encouraging them to read aloud and to complete their reading record each time they read.

Spelling - Children will have weekly spelling sessions in school which will focus on a new spelling pattern. Children are encouraged to use these spelling patterns in lessons throughout the curriculum. We will not carry out weekly spelling tests. We will send spelling lists home for children to practise and in class we will be completing spelling activities and games which are designed to help reinforce the spelling patterns.

This is where you will find a recap of the learning we have covered.

Our school Christian Value for this term is Thankfulness

We will look at why being thankful is important and discuss what the children were thankful for in their lives.  Christians believe that God loves and cares for them in many different ways in all aspects of their life. Christians know that their response to this provision should be one of thankfulness and praise.

Thessalonians 5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Psalm 107:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!

Ephesians 5:20Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What do we do in school in response to thankfulness?

  • We show our appreciation for pupil’s achievements by giving praise, stickers, Dojo awards and certificates to them.
  • We know that having food, clothes and lovely things is a blessing and not a right.
  • We show our thankfulness through our support to charities that help others who are not as fortunate as ourselves.
  • We give thanks to God through our hymns and our prayers.
  • We learn to be thankful for the skills of others and the ways in which they enrich our lives.
  • We say thank you to each other and know that saying thank you is important and polite.
