Classroom Routines

Snack

Please bring a bottle of water to school daily, clearly labelled with your name. Healthy snacks can be purchased from the snack trolley or brought in from home.

PE

Please wear your PE kit to school on PE days (Friday). Children should wear black shorts, house colour or white t-shirt and trainers, labelled clearly with their name. They may also wear black jogging bottoms when completing activities outdoors. 

Uniform

Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child's name.

Spelling

Children will complete spelling and grammar activities throughout the week during our Spelling lessons. The Year 6 Read Write Inc. (RWI) Spelling programme provides a structured, consistent approach to teaching spelling across the year.

The scheme is organised into weekly units, each focusing on a specific spelling pattern, rule, or morphological feature. Every unit follows a predictable routine that helps children internalise new spellings through daily practice and repetition.

Topic - Sustainable Earth

This term, our class will explore:
How Has Earth Changed and What Is Our Responsibility for Its Future?"

By the end of this topic, the children will develop a deep understanding of how our planet has changed over time and the challenges it currently faces. Children will explore how life began on Earth, how natural resources such as oils are formed, and how the planet has evolved from prehistoric times to the present day. They will investigate the causes and impacts of climate change, and examine how natural disasters occur through studying the Earth’s layers, materials, and environmental processes.

Through this theme, children will strengthen their scientific knowledge of living things, ecosystems, and the conditions that support life on Earth. They will also consider the actions individuals, communities, and countries can take to protect the planet, developing a sense of responsibility and agency in contributing to a sustainable future.

In Literacy, children will apply their understanding creatively by writing stories set in future worlds, imagining what Earth might look like in 100 years if we continue or change our current habits. In Numeracy, they will develop their understanding of units of measure through real‑world environmental contexts, such as energy use, rainfall, and resource consumption. In Expressive Arts, children will interpret the theme through movement, creating a dance piece that reflects the power, fragility, and beauty of our planet.

This topic will nurture curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. It will encourage learners to make meaningful connections between science, geography, the arts, and their own lives, fostering a strong sense of global citizenship and responsibility for the Earth they will inherit.

Pupil voice is very important to us at St David's. Please see below for the Pupil Voice questions the children have thought of:

How did life begin on our planet? (TC)

Homework will be placed on Google Classroom every Friday. Please submit all homework by the following Wednesday.

Each week, children will be asked to complete either a piece of numeracy or literacy-based homework which will alternate from week to week.

Below is a termly homework grid  based on our topic. Children may do as many homework tasks as they like over the course of the term.  

Weekly spellings will also be taught in class and given to the children to practice at home. 

The children will be rewarded for completing their homework by receiving dojos!

4 Tips to Encourage Reading Kids For the Future

In Year 6, our Literacy sessions will develop a range of skills including: Writing, Reading and Oracy. Each session will feature the following:

An engaging warm-up (Consolidating past skills or developing new skills)

Concrete learning (Development of Literacy skills)

Throughout the week, we will also have opportunities each day for 25 minutes of spelling practice. For more information please see our 'Homework' section.

Through our daily guided group reading sessions, pupils have the opportunity to read with an adult, practice spellings, reading comprehension, and Welsh tasks. 

 

How to Improve your Numeracy Skills?

In Year 6, we aim to cover a range of skills in our Numeracy sessions, including: Number, Fractions, Algebra and Data. Each session will feature the following:

- Engaging warm-up (Range of number of work or introduction of new skills)

- Concrete learning (Development of Numeracy skills)

Welsh 

The Welsh language is very important at St David's. We encourage staff and children to use incidental Welsh inside and outside the classroom. We do daily Helpwr Heddiw sessions to support children in learning new phrases for their Welsh topic. 

We also have a weekly Welsh phrase of the week. Please see these below to support your child further at home:

MFL

As part of International Languages, we will be learning Spanish. 

Languagenut is a wonderful online tool where children can access resources to support the development of their new language. Each child will have their own log-in details where they can gain points for activities completed.​​​​​​ All children should have brought home their login details. However, if you need a reminder please contact year6@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk. 

Internet Safety 

At St David's we promote the use of 'SMART' rules daily, as we know how important it is to stay safe online.

Please encourage your children to use these 'SMART' rules at home too.

Jigsaw

What is Jigsaw, the mindful approach to Health and Well-being, and how does it work?

Jigsaw is a whole-school approach and embodies a positive philosophy and creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings, as well as building their capacity to learn. Jigsaw is a comprehensive and completely original PSE programme for the whole primary school from ages 3-22.  The Jigsaw Programme also delivers Relationships and Sexuality Education. Ensuring it meets the requirements set out in the RSE Code for Phases 2 and 2. Life cycles and human reproduction will be taught in a sensitive manner, age-related, in all schools in Wales. This means that all learners must receive this education. There is no right to withdraw from RSE in the new curriculum.

 

Healthy Schools 

St David's is a healthy school and we encourage all children to eat healthy food in their lunchboxes and at snack time.

Children will earn a point for their class for bringing in a piece of fresh fruit or vegetable for a snack. These points will be added up each week and the class with the most points will be rewarded with extra playtime at the end of the week. Children can also earn an extra 5 points by bringing in a healthy lunchbox or eating all of their healthy school lunch, and stickers will be given out by Year 6 monitors. Please help to support us in our campaign to encourage children to eat healthily in school. 

Please ensure that your child has a labelled bottle in school daily, containing water only. We have fresh drinking water fountains, where the children can refill their bottles. 

Please - NO sweets, chocolate and sugary drinks in lunchboxes and nothing that contains NUTS due to some children having severe allergic reactions. Thank you.

 

101 Experiences 

We would like you to take part in our 101 Experiences challenge - 101 things for your child to experience during their time at St David’s C.I.W. Primary School. We would be delighted to see our children doing these activities outside of school, so please send in any evidence of each experience to year6@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk 

Each time a child achieves 5 experiences from the same category, they will get a sticker which shows the religious character which symbolises the associated purpose from the Four Purposes of the new curriculum.

Active Travel

WOW tracker is a pupil led initiative where children self-report how they get to school every day using our interactive WOW tracker. If pupils travel sustainably (walk, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they are rewarded with a WOW badge at the end of the month. 

Please support our mission by encouraging your child to travel sustainably to school or use our Park & Stride arrangement and park at Pentwyn Leisure Centre.

 

Rights Respecting School 

St David's CIW Primary School is proud to be a Rights Respecting School, which means we are a community where children's rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.

This term we will be focusing on Articles 24, 25, 27, 33, 34, 35 and 36 from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

After School Clubs 

After-school clubs run on a Tuesday afternoon 3:30-4:20.

Our current club for Dosbarth Ogmore is Drawing Club.
