Uniform

Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child's name.

Spelling

Children will complete spelling and grammar activities throughout the week as Early Morning Activities and during Literacy starters. These skills will be developed in work across the curriculum.

Each week we will focus on different spelling patterns. These will be practised in class and added to our Google Classroom for you to practice at home.

We are now running weekly spelling tests. These will take place each Monday morning, and will use the words the children have practiced in the previous week. Each child will be assigned a coloured group, please contact us if you are unsure as to what group your child is in.

Please use the Spelling Menu file below for ideas on how to have fun with learning spellings.

Our Topic

Our topic for the first half of the Summer Term is... Cardiff Bay

Stories in stone and song: Exploring cardiff bays cultural landmarks

Cardiff Bay’s cultural landmarks offer powerful expressions of Welsh identity, and this theme invites pupils to explore how places like the Senedd and the Wales Millennium Centre communicate the nation’s language, values, and sense of community. Through art and literacy, pupils will learn to interpret the stories these landmarks tell and then use creative storytelling and visual expression to share those meanings in their own voices. By the end of the theme, they will have investigated the symbolism and significance of key sites, produced imaginative artworks and narratives inspired by them, and ultimately designed their own landmark that reflects the culture and community they value.

Alongside this, we will have the opportunity to explore:

LLC - Story writing & Poetry

Humanities - Cultural significance of Cardiff Bay and history

STEM - DT Project

Expressive Arts - Artist study project

RVE - Who do people follow? (Reflecting on Christianity, other faith and non-faith views)

Maths and Numeracy - Multiplication and Division

Health and Wellbeing - Zones of regulation

See below for Medium Term Planning for our Spring term topic (See bottom of page)

Pupil voice is very important to us at St David's. We look forward to generating more ideas together as a class for our new topic.

See below for some of the areas we will be exploring thanks to Pupil Voice questioning:

What is the oldest building in Cardiff Bay? What is the newest? How deep is the water, and how big is Cardiff Bay in square kilometers? How many buildings are there, and how big are they? Which buildings are the most important, and what is the shortest one? How far does the beach stretch, and how many people visit Cardiff Bay? When was Cardiff Bay first built, and how did it all begin? How old are the buildings now, and is Cardiff Bay important to Wales? Is it bigger than other cities in the world? And perhaps most intriguingly—what is Cardiff Bay’s biggest secret?

Homework will be placed on Google Classroom every Friday. Please submit all homework by the following Wednesday so we are able to look at your wonderful work and send this back to you.

Each week, children will be asked to complete either a piece of numeracy or literacy based homework which will alternate from week to week. There is also be a termly homework grid based on our topic. Children may do as many homework tasks as they like over the course of the term. Please see below for this terms homework grid. Children are allowed to complete their homework in whichever format they wish to choose. E.g hwb, PowerPoint, homework book, posters, etc.

Weekly spellings will also be taught in class and given to the children to practice at home.

The children will be rewarded for completing their homework by receiving dojos!

The Four Purposes

The four purposes are that all children and young people will be:

Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.

Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.

Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.

Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

In Dosbarth Wye, we will support ourselves and each other in becoming Ambitious, Capable Learners; Enterprising, Creative Contributors; Ethical, informed citizens and Healthy, Confident Individuals. This will be achieved through collaboration and independent work both inside and outside our classroom.

Welsh / Cymraeg

We will be continuing to learn Welsh each week. This term, our Welsh topic is 'Hamdden' which means 'Leisure'. We will explore what we like and enjoy in Welsh. We will learn key Welsh vocabulary associated with different places in our community, including looking at directions in Welsh, and developing our writing into full sentences.

We also have a weekly Welsh phrase of the week. Please see these below to support your child further at home:

Modern Foreign Languages

This year we are going to be learning Spanish. We will be learning key Spanish phrases through fun games and activities. As well as this we have Spanish sessions with Tim where we learn through music and song! This half term we will be looking at Spanish foods and saying what we like and don't like using the phrases 'Me gusta.....' and 'No me gusta......'

https://www.languagenut.com/en-gb/

Languagenut is a fantastic tool where children can access resources to support the development of their new language (Spanish). Each child will have their own log in details where they can gain points for activities completed. LanguageNut will also give you the correct pronunciation of words and phrases.

All children should have brought home their login details, however if you need a reminder please contact year5@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk.

Online Safety!

At St David's, we are extremely fortunate to have access to a range of different ICT devices. We promote the use of 'SMART' rules daily, as we know how important it is to stay safe online.

Please encourage your children to use these 'SMART' rules at home too.

Jigsaw PSHE

The Curriculum for Wales is now statutory requirement since September 2022 for all schools in Wales. It has a key role to play in helping children and young people navigate the world safely. Welsh Government wants education to help our children to develop as healthy, confident individuals, ready for the next chapter in their life after school. Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) encompasses the knowledge, skills, dispositions and values that will empower learners to:

  • support their health and well-being
  • develop healthy, safe and fulfilling relationships of all kinds, including those with family and friends, and in time, romantic and sexual relationships
  • navigate and make sense of how relationships, sex, gender and sexuality shape their own and other people’s identities and lives
  • understand and support their rights and those of others to enjoy equitable, safe, healthy and fulfilling relationships throughout their lives.

Healthy Lunches

We are very proud that St David's is a healthy school. We encourage all children to eat healthy during snack and lunch times.

We are able to provide snack for your children in school at a daily cost of £2 per week / £14 per term. Please pay via Parent Pay.

Please ensure that your child has a labelled bottle in school daily, containing water only. We have fresh drinking water fountains, where the children can refill their bottles.

For advice on how to make a healthy packed lunch, please visit: https://www.nhs.uk/healthier-families/recipes/healthier-lunchboxes/

101 Experiences

We would like you to take part in our 101 Experiences challenge - 101 things for your child to experience during their time at St David’s C.I.W. Primary School. We would be delighted to see our children doing these activities outside of school, so please send in any evidence of each experience to year5@stdavidsciwprm.cardiff.sch.uk

Each time a child achieves 5 experiences from the same category, they will get a sticker which shows the religious character which symbolises the associated purpose from the Four Purposes of the new curriculum.

Active Travel

WOW is a pupil-led initiative where children self-report how they get to school every day using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker. If they travel sustainably (walk, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge. It's that easy!

Please support us on our Active Travel mission by encouraging your child to walk, cycle or scoot to school, or use our Park and Stride arrangements at Pentwyn Leisure Centre. This will help keep our bodies healthy and help reduce our carbon footprint.

Rights Respecting Schools

St David's C.I.W Primary School is proud to be a Rights Respecting School, which means we are a community where children's rights are learned, taught, practiced, respected, protected and promoted.

This term we will be focusing on Articles 10, 20 and 23 from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Picture News!

When discussing the Picture News, we have been challenging ourselves to use new, ambitious vocabulary to describe our feelings and opinions.

After School Clubs

Throughout the Spring term, Miss Cooper  will be running after school club for pupils in Year 5. This will be

'Drawing club'

Please contact clubs@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk to find out if there are spaces to join, or to be added to the reserve list.
