From slate boards to smart boards: education in the past

This term, Dosbarth Rhymney will be exploring the theme of schools in the past. Pupils will investigate how school buildings have changed over time and compare them with those they see today. They will learn about what children used to wear to school, the toys and games they played, the subjects they studied, and why each child had their own desk. Children will reflect on what they like about school both in the past and in the present, before creating their own factfile all about school.

As part of this topic, they will also study St David’s in the past through the lens of artist Rhiannon Roberts, using her colourful and expressive painting style as inspiration. Pupils will experiment with colour, shape, and pattern to create vibrant images of their own school. Our beautiful pieces of artwork will then be displayed in our Expressive Arts Exhibition in March 2026.

In technology, Dosbarth Rhymney will be exploring the exciting world of product design. Children will design their very own “old style” school bag, taking inspiration from the past. They will investigate different materials, consider measurements, and create prototypes before moving on to the process of construction. Finally, pupils will reflect on their finished product, thinking carefully about what worked well and what they might improve. This hands-on project will give children the chance to experience the full design cycle from idea to creation, and we can’t wait to get sewing!

See below for Medium Term Planning for our Autumn Term Topic.

Weekly planning will be available on Google classroom.

Pupil voice is very important to us at St David's. Here are some of our questions from this term:

-What's in the school?

-Why do they have separate tables?

-What were the teachers like?

-Why do they have a big board in the classroom?

-Are there any toys to play with?

-What did they wear?

-What did they learn?

Each week, children will be asked to complete either a piece of numeracy or literacy based homework which will alternate from week to week. There will also be a termly homework grid based on our topic. Children may do as many homework tasks as they like over the course of the term.

Children are allowed to complete their homework in whichever format they wish to choose. E.g hwb, PowerPoint, on paper, videos etc.

The four purposes are that all children and young people will be:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
  • Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.
  • Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.
  • Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

This half term our Christian value is: Courage

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go".- Joshua 1:9

There are many ways you can explore respect at home. Please find the PDF below for family activities.

Read Write Inc is taught daily (Monday- Friday) across PS1 & 2. Children are grouped according to their current ability. In each session we focus on identifying and learning Read Write Inc sounds; reading green and red words; and spelling green words. Groupings are assessed every half term.

This half term, Dosbarth Rhymney will be continuing to develop their reading and writing skills and blending sounds.

This half term we will be focussing on:

-One more than/ one less than within 20.

-Partitioning teen numbers into tens and units.

-Partitioning and recombining 6,7,8,9

-Investigating doubles

-Subtracting numbers within 10.

-Pay for items up to 20p.

-Find combinations of coins up to 10p.

As with writing, forming numbers correctly is extremely important. Above are some short rhymes which will help your child remember the correct number formation in a fun way!

www.languagenut.com

Languagenut is a wonderful online tool where children can access resources to support the development of their new language (French). Each child will have their own log in details where they can gain points for activities completed.

At St David's we promote the use of 'SMART' rules daily, as we know how important it is to stay safe online.

Please encourage your children to use these 'SMART' rules at home too.

The Curriculum for Wales is now statutory requirement since September 2022 for all schools in Wales. It has a key role to play in helping children and young people navigate the world safely. Welsh Government wants education to help our children to develop as healthy, confident individuals, ready for the next chapter in their life after school. Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) encompasses the knowledge, skills, dispositions and values that will empower learners to:

  • support their health and well-being
  • develop healthy, safe and fulfilling relationships of all kinds, including those with family and friends, and in time, romantic and sexual relationships
  • navigate and make sense of how relationships, sex, gender and sexuality shape their own and other people’s identities and lives
  • understand and support their rights and those of others to enjoy equitable, safe, healthy and fulfilling relationships throughout their lives.

Children will earn a point for their class for bringing in a piece of fresh fruit or vegetable for snack. These points will be added up each week and the class with the most points will be rewarded with extra playtime at the end of the week. Children can also earn an extra 5 points by bringing in a healthy lunchbox or eating all of their healthy school lunch, and stickers will be given out by Year 6 monitors. Please help to support us in our campaign to encourage children to eat healthily in school.

Please ensure that your child has a labelled bottle in school daily, containing water only. We have fresh drinking water fountains, where the children can refill their bottles.

Please - NO sweets, chocolate and sugary drinks in lunchboxes and nothing that contains NUTS due to some children having severe allergic reactions. Thank you.

As a school we have created a list of 101 experiences we believe all children should have the opportunity to explore. These are linked to the 4 purposes of the Curriculum for Wales. Once you have completed an experience, send a photo to year1@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk who will upload the experience to Seesaw. When you collect 5 of more experiences from each purpose you will be celebrated in our VIP assembly. Happy exploring!

As a school we are working hard to reduce our carbon footprint as part of our Eco schools awards. We record how we travel to school each day and gain badges and awards every month if we have met our target. Help us to travel safer and greener by walking, cycling or scooting to school! You could always park and stride or catch a bus.

Please support our mission by encouraging your child to travel sustainably to school or use our Park & Stride arrangement and park at Pentwyn Leisure Centre.

St David's CIW Primary School is proud to be a Rights Respecting School, which means we are a community where children's rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.

This term we will be focusing on Articles 10, 20 and 23 from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

During our worship time on Mondays, we have been learning about current news, topics and events. Then we have been exploring the key questions linked to these further in class. Here are some of the questions we have been discussing!

When discussing the Picture News, we have been challenging ourselves to use new, ambitious vocabulary to describe our feelings and opinions.

After school clubs run on a Tuesday afternoon 3:30-4:30.

Our current club for Dosbarth Rhymney is Lego run by Mrs Maunder.

All clubs will run for a term and will change every term. If your child would like to take part in our after school club or be added to the waiting list please send an e-mail to clubs@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk
