Each week we will focus on different spelling patterns. These will be practised in class and added to our Google Classroom for you to practice at home.
We are now running weekly spelling tests. These will take place each Monday morning, and will use the words the children have practiced in the previous week. Each child will be assigned a coloured group, please contact us if you are unsure as to what group your child is in.
Please use the Spelling Menu file below for ideas on how to have fun with learning spellings.
Our Topic
Our topic for the first half of the Summer Term is... Tomorrows World
What will our oceans look like in tomorrow's world?
Our Year 5 learners have plunged into Tomorrow’s World: Oceans, a vibrant topic that’s already making waves across the classroom. From designing futuristic underwater inventions to investigating how we can protect our seas for future generations, the children are diving deep into creativity and curiosity. This term, they’ll even be writing a persuasive letter to the Prime Minister about the importance of caring for our oceans, using their voices to inspire real change. We’ll also be exploring the fascinating life of Sir David Attenborough, discovering how his incredible work has helped the world understand and appreciate the wonders beneath the waves. With hands‑on challenges, exciting research tasks, and plenty of opportunities to imagine the oceans of tomorrow, our pupils are set for an unforgettable learning adventure.

Alongside this, we will have the opportunity to explore:
LLC -Biography writing and Persuasive letter writing
Humanities - Geography of oceans around the world
STEM -Habitats, animals and food chains
Expressive Arts - Digital movie
RVE - Who do people follow? (Reflecting on Christianity, other faith and non-faith views)
Maths and Numeracy - Decimals, Time and Units of measure
Health and Wellbeing - Jigsaw

See below for Medium Term Planning for our Spring term topic (See bottom of page)
Pupil voice is very important to us at St David's. We look forward to generating more ideas together as a class for our new topic.
See below for some of the areas we will be exploring thanks to Pupil Voice questioning: These are the questions year 5 asked about our new topic.
How do fish survive when there is plastic in the sea? I want to learn about different fish throughout the years? I want to learn about food chains. I want to learn about the oldest fish. How deep is the sea? What can we do to help? How do our oceans impact our lives? Which fish have been here for years? How do fish adapt to warmer or colder water temperatures? How can we make sure our oceans have a better future? I want to learn how many fish are in the sea I would like to learn about sea creatures and how they are affected by pollution Why do fish eat the plastic? Did someone create fish? Where did they come from? How are fish created? What fish are hard to find? How can humans make a difference to the oceans? How do fish survive in something as dangerous as the ocean? How do the fish survive when there is pollution in the water? What is in the deep ocean? I would like to learn about what fish see under the water I want to learn about the impact on the fish and coral reefs I want to learn about what type of fish live in the ocean and how they are being affected How are fish created? Cycle of coral reefs? Types of sharks and fish? Shipwrecks? I wonder if there are over 100 species of sharks and sealions? I would like to know about how many fish are in the world I want to learn about how sharks live I want to learn about fish, extinct fish, how fish live and how fish eat I want to learn about different types of fish Will there be new fish in tomorrows world? I want to lean about how fish know they can get stuck in a coral reef How does rubbish get into the sea and come out of the sea? Does it affect climate change? I want to know how they clean up all the rubbish in the sea

Homework will be placed on Google Classroom every Friday. Please submit all homework by the following Wednesday so we are able to look at your wonderful work and send this back to you.
Each week, children will be asked to complete either a piece of numeracy or literacy based homework which will alternate from week to week. There is also be a termly homework grid based on our topic. Children may do as many homework tasks as they like over the course of the term. Please see below for this terms homework grid. Children are allowed to complete their homework in whichever format they wish to choose. E.g hwb, PowerPoint, homework book, posters, etc.
Weekly spellings will also be taught in class and given to the children to practice at home.
The children will be rewarded for completing their homework by receiving dojos!

The Four Purposes

The four purposes are that all children and young people will be:
Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.
Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.
Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
In Dosbarth Wye, we will support ourselves and each other in becoming Ambitious, Capable Learners; Enterprising, Creative Contributors; Ethical, informed citizens and Healthy, Confident Individuals. This will be achieved through collaboration and independent work both inside and outside our classroom.
Christian Value
Our Christian Value for this Half Term is 'Trust'.

Welsh / Cymraeg
We will be continuing to learn Welsh each week. This term, our Welsh topic is 'Hamdden' which means 'Leisure'. We will explore what we like and enjoy in Welsh. We will learn key Welsh vocabulary associated with different places in our community, including looking at directions in Welsh, and developing our writing into full sentences.
We also have a weekly Welsh phrase of the week. Please see these below to support your child further at home:

Modern Foreign Languages

This year we are going to be learning Spanish. We will be learning key Spanish phrases through fun games and activities. As well as this we have Spanish sessions with Tim where we learn through music and song! This half term we will be looking at Spanish foods and saying what we like and don't like using the phrases 'Me gusta.....' and 'No me gusta......'

https://www.languagenut.com/en-gb/
Languagenut is a fantastic tool where children can access resources to support the development of their new language (Spanish). Each child will have their own log in details where they can gain points for activities completed. LanguageNut will also give you the correct pronunciation of words and phrases.
All children should have brought home their login details, however if you need a reminder please contact year5@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk.
Online Safety!

At St David's, we are extremely fortunate to have access to a range of different ICT devices. We promote the use of 'SMART' rules daily, as we know how important it is to stay safe online.

Please encourage your children to use these 'SMART' rules at home too.

Jigsaw PSHE
The Curriculum for Wales is now statutory requirement since September 2022 for all schools in Wales. It has a key role to play in helping children and young people navigate the world safely. Welsh Government wants education to help our children to develop as healthy, confident individuals, ready for the next chapter in their life after school. Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) encompasses the knowledge, skills, dispositions and values that will empower learners to:
- support their health and well-being
- develop healthy, safe and fulfilling relationships of all kinds, including those with family and friends, and in time, romantic and sexual relationships
- navigate and make sense of how relationships, sex, gender and sexuality shape their own and other people’s identities and lives
- understand and support their rights and those of others to enjoy equitable, safe, healthy and fulfilling relationships throughout their lives.
Healthy Lunches

We are very proud that St David's is a healthy school. We encourage all children to eat healthy during snack and lunch times.
We are able to provide snack for your children in school at a daily cost of £2 per week / £14 per term. Please pay via Parent Pay.
Please ensure that your child has a labelled bottle in school daily, containing water only. We have fresh drinking water fountains, where the children can refill their bottles.
For advice on how to make a healthy packed lunch, please visit: https://www.nhs.uk/healthier-families/recipes/healthier-lunchboxes/
101 Experiences

We would like you to take part in our 101 Experiences challenge - 101 things for your child to experience during their time at St David’s C.I.W. Primary School. We would be delighted to see our children doing these activities outside of school, so please send in any evidence of each experience to year5@stdavidsciwprm.cardiff.sch.uk
Each time a child achieves 5 experiences from the same category, they will get a sticker which shows the religious character which symbolises the associated purpose from the Four Purposes of the new curriculum.
Active Travel

WOW is a pupil-led initiative where children self-report how they get to school every day using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker. If they travel sustainably (walk, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge. It's that easy!
Please support us on our Active Travel mission by encouraging your child to walk, cycle or scoot to school, or use our Park and Stride arrangements at Pentwyn Leisure Centre. This will help keep our bodies healthy and help reduce our carbon footprint.

Rights Respecting Schools
St David's C.I.W Primary School is proud to be a Rights Respecting School, which means we are a community where children's rights are learned, taught, practiced, respected, protected and promoted.
This term we will be focusing on Articles 24, 25, 27, 33, 34, 35 and 36 from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Picture News!

When discussing the Picture News, we have been challenging ourselves to use new, ambitious vocabulary to describe our feelings and opinions.

After School Clubs
Throughout the Spring term, Mrs D will be running after school club for pupils in Year 5. This will be
'Football club'

Please contact clubs@stdavidsprm.cardiff.sch.uk to find out if there are spaces to join, or to be added to the reserve list.
